So I understand people can have their own opinions and that not everyone can love what I love, and I understand some people might not agree with some of my reviews, thinking that a film deserved a score worse or better than the score I gave it. But it works both ways and sometimes I think reviewers are completely wrong about movies in both the sense of giving a good review when it’s bad and a bad review when it’s good. This is entirely my opinion and feel free to argue against me. If you can enjoy what i hate then that’s awesome and i can understand people have different tastes so for a little bit of fun i have compiled a list of 10 films I hate that critics love and 10 films I love that critics hate. Prepare for my totally biased and nostalgic opinion and see how much we have in common…Or not.
10 Films I Hate that Critics Loved.
Number 10: Avatar.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Audience: 82%
Critic: 82%
Four words Mind Blowing Special Effects…that’s all in my opinion this film has going for it… the special effects are spectacular and it’s a beautiful looking film. However just because something looks good doesn’t mean it will be and this movie is a perfect example of style over substance the film lacks in every other aspect than the CGI. The story is just boring and the acting is sub par for the talent that is involved which is disappointing it has Sigourney Weaver of Alien fame involved in this.. Hopefully since the sequels have taken so long to put out, they focus more on narrative rather than glossy CGI goodness.
Number 9: The Conjuring 2.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 80%
Audience: 81%
First of all i loved the first Conjuring movie it was creepy and intense and having a realistic but supernatural feel to it which was great to say it was based on true events…fast forward to the sequel and any realism the movie had is thrown out of the window in favor of weird monsters such as the Crooked Man. It just looks out of place in the movie and takes me out of the story of ‘based on true events’. Of course Hollywood adds things to make it more interesting but if i were to watch something that was painstakingly recreated from the Warrens stories i would find that all the more terrifying, rather than a dog turning into a weird lanky demon man in a bowler hat. The third Annabelle movie has a fucking werewolf in it…no Thank you.
Number 8: Black Panther.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 97%
Audience: 79%
Until this movie marvel only had a few duds, those films are obviously Thor The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk which were not awful just not up to the standard of Marvel we are used to. Then Black Panther happened and it got critical praise across the board from critics calling it “The best Marvel has done” and i sat in my local Cinema at midnight and left disappointed. The films story was simple and the dialogue was clunky the jokes landed with a thud *Ahem “What are thooooose?” comes to mind and it just felt off. The final fight looked like a cut scene from a 2006 video game and it just didn’t work. I don’t hate this film because it’s a ‘terrible movie’ because it isn’t there are worse superhero movies out there I hate it because it could have been so much more and i was just left disappointed because as Civil War proved T’Challa is a bad ass, too bad his movie wasn’t.
Number 7: The Amazing Spider-man.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 73%
Audience: 77%
The Amazing Spider-man ironically directed by Marc ‘Webb’ is the ‘untold story’ of Peter Parker. Except it isn’t and we have seen it all before in Movies, TV Shows and even Books it tells nothing new and goes for this dark and gritty style but then tosses that all out the window for the sequel; Rhys Ifans is miscast as the villain, Andrew Garfield is just ‘Okay’ as the titular character and Spider man runs around stalking girls in a suit that looks like it was made from red and blue basketballs. I can’t stand it. However it would be cool to see a live action Spider verse movie with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland…come on Sony give us what we want.
Number 6: Wonder Woman.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 93%
Audience: 87%
Up until this point I loved the DC Movies and when I saw that Wonder Woman had 93% on RT I was ready to watch the best superhero movie I had ever seen…But then i left wondering “Why?” it was so boring (except the fight scenes were really really well directed and shot as well as superbly performed) the movie had a lack luster Villain that was by the end of it a CGI bodybuilder with a 80’s porn moustache. And it didn’t reinvent the genre as so many critics were saying. Followed by a worst movie (Justice League) the DC universe seemed to be dying slowly. However a recent release of great and some okay movies gives me a glimmer of hope…Just hope the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 keeps the trend going and doesn’t follow the mistakes of its predecessor. But it does look pretty sweet.
Number 5: Us.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 93%
Audience: 59%
This one really hurts me to write. I wanted to love this movie, the trailer actually creeped me out; it was how a horror movie trailer should be done. However what we got was something that wasn’t the slightest bit scary and a plot that relies too much on a plot twist ending that doesn’t make that much sense. Get Out was a great horror and was really unnerving as I had absolutely no clue what the hell i was seeing or what was happening and it was great as a horror movie but also a great satire on white privilege. Just like the doppelgangers in Us, I think that this movie is a doppelganger of a much better movie and we just ended up with the unrefined version and the real movie is left underground somewhere never to be seen.
Number 4: Annihilation.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 88%
Audience: 66%
This movie. What the hell even is it. There was so much I didn’t understand…Not just from a storytelling perspective, but from a film making perspective. If you have a movie that takes place in a world where CGI is needed to create it then make sure you have the technology for it. Part of this film looked so obviously fake it took me out of the movie completely. As well as this I understand having a story that makes you think “Wait? What?” can be great for your film (Predestination and Arrival are great examples) this one has no pay off and i go “ I don’t get it” and rather than researching it to understand what i have just watched i go “Nah i don’t really care” and forget about everything just because it has too much going on for its own good and it feels muddled, overfilled and clunky. Someone turns into a bush and people just go “yeah Okay, She’s a bush now” i’m paraphrasing of course.
Number 3: Black Swan.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 85%
Audience: 84%
Natalie Portman hits this list again in a movie called Black Swan you may have heard of it. Well I had the unfortunate issue of not only hearing about it but also watching it. This movie just didn’t really do it for me. Visually it is stunning but I just found myself disinterested most of its run time and just couldn’t get invested in the characters and the plot. As much as i didn’t like this movie and wish i had given it a pass. I can see how some people do love this movie. Darren Aronofsky is a great filmmaker (Requiem for a Dream is a must see.) But i just feel he missed the mark majorly in this flick but i couldn’t give you a definitive reason on why i feel this way, just like Natalie Portman in this movie it’s a little strange…so do i get an Oscar?
Number 2: Incredibles 2

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 94%
Audience: 84%
The critic consensus reads “Incredibles 2 reunites Pixar’s family crime fighting team for a long-awaited follow-up that may not quite live up to the original, but comes close enough to earn its name” Now this is something I disagree with massively i am a huge Disney fan and a even bigger Pixar fan (Inside out is my favourite). But Incredibles 2 just did not have the charm that the original one did. Yeah it looks prettier but overall the film just falls flat, Mostly because of its predictable plot and a sub-par villain (who i guessed was the villain when they first came on screen) when we compare them to Syndrome in the first movie. The film was just a huge disappointment. I did however love the “Math is Math” scene.
Number 1: The Exorcist.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores:
Critic: 84%
Audience: 87%
Right here me out…in the 70’s when this movie came out i can see why people were scared of it. However i was born in 1996 so the movie was already 23 years old (As of writing this that is my current age) So watching this now i just find it hilarious it’s still a good watch just because of how funny it is ( I don’t think it has aged well) but i don’t like it because i was left disappointed because all my older family members told me that and i quote “The scariest fucking shit you’ll ever see” i was underwhelmed massively when it wasn’t all that scary. The behind the scenes drama and the strange goings on are scarier than the movie, Honestly give it a Google it’s crazy. That said if anything in this film happened to me in real life i would well and truly shit a brick (That’s quite the understatement).
