Becky is a 2020 action-thriller directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, from a screenplay by Nick Morris, Lane Skye and Ruckus Skye and tells the story of you guessed it a girl named Becky, who is struggling to cope with the death of her mother and and becomes a rebellious teenager who hates her father for moving on and finding new love…all pretty normal stuff. Until however a group of escape convicts lead by a Nazi break into their summer house to find some sort of key and things take a turn for the worse and Becky must survive in a R rated home alone-esq charade that would make Kevin Mcalister proud…but just because he’s proud doesn’t mean it’s great.
The film stars Lulu Wilson as Becky and Joel Mchale as Jeff (No this unfortunately is not the Community movie) and Kevin James as Dominick the Nazi leader and as far a performances go these performances are pretty okay. Lulu Wilson is good as the lead and plays a teenager as well as a teenager could and as the film progresses she becomes more and more psychotic and begins to give a much more interesting performance but as this escalated to the point of interesting the film is over. Joel Mchale is alright as the dad but it’s strange to see Joel Mchale not playing the Jackass of the film as he always plays Jackasses…Mostly. Kevin James as a Nazi is just Kevin James without the fumbling about and burp-snarts he’s isn’t mis-cast per say however he could have gone so much further with this character and played such a evil villain rather than someone who looks like Kevin James and does bad things because he has gun. And even then every character including his own henchmen do the complete opposite of what he says.
The highlight of the movie is the brutality. You can see that the Special effects team had a great time with the practical make-up and it looks fantastic. It’s bloody, brutal and glorious and at times it made me cringe with what was happening on screen. I just wish there was more of it.
The story is barebones and severely lacks any explanation about the main plot of the film…The Key, except about a throw away line that Dominick mumbles about the key bringing balance to the different races and each race will do what they were put on the earth to do…serve their purpose so to speak, like what? Is it supernatural or is it something else…who knows…i don’t think the writers even know that’s why they set themselves up for a potential sequel with a cliffhanger ending…because you know everything has to be a franchise now. It’s hard to believe it took three people to write this movie and between them they couldn’t come up with a definitive ending.
Final Score.
Title:Mediocre
Becky isn’t the worst movie it is just massively below average and is severely hurt by bad writing and the ending. i’m intrigued to know what the key actual does however we won’t probably ever find out as Dominick has his brain Literally scrambled by a Lawnmower…so yeah that’s Becky, Gloriously Gory and shittily scripted.
