Really? Review

Really? Is a 2018 Chinese comedy movie written and directed by Yiwei Liu and follows Xia Zhi (pronounced Sha-Chi) who bluffs, lies and exaggerates every detail of his life in order to be noticed and respected. This gains him a reputation in his town especially with police officers. One day he is sat in his girlfriends restaurant making up a convoluted story on how he hunted down Saddam Huseins lost treasure he see’s two men walk past the window with a rough looking man, Xia Zhi uses this to come up with another lie that he as witnessed a kidnapping however, Xia Zhi’s lie might not be all that false as he is soon overheard by the wrong people and his lies soon become reality and he must try to prove his life is in danger in a classic twist of the boy who cried wolf.

I found this movie through Facebook after seeing a small clip of it and thought it looked interesting however there was no title to be found so I searched and searched the internet until I found it. I eventually ran in it on Youtube with subtitles so I booted up my xbox and we were all good to go.

So How was it…Well the movie definitely gets props for being unique this movie is bonkers the scenes where the Xia Zhi is getting chased and/or is getting a assassination attempt pulled out on him are so over the top they almost break but they are a delight to watch if you love wacky slapstick humour and the film crew manage to pull it off.

This is one of the most colourful movies I have seen in a long time. The entire movie looks like it’s a music video to a K-pop song with bright and garish colours flung on screen and cartoonish visuals to match. The filmmakers also use CGI in a clever way when the film flashes into one of Xia Zhi lies the CGI used to present these stories are purposely bad (im talking Spy kids franchise bad) and i only know this is done intentionally as there is one shot in particular in real life in the movie that follows a bullet in a assasination attempt which was beautifully done and looks spectacular when compared to these early visuals.

The story of the movie is interesting and when we see it in action it’s great, however the movie is only on for 1 hour and 40 mins but my god it feels so much longer. The movie does drag some time with repetitive dialogue of Xia Zhi trying to convince others that he is no longer lying. It’s just a little boring at times and makes me wish that the film kept the bonker aesthetic all the way through.

The finale though is what saves this movie from being mediocre. It’s tense and quite dark when compared to the tone of the rest of the film and it finishes with a bright tongue in cheek joke about liars in the everyday world and a surprising twist ending that makes you go..”haha that was funny… wait hang on a second?”.

Final Score.

Title: Okay

Overall Really? Isn’t the best foreign language movie I have watched but it also isn’t the worst and was entertaining enough to keep me watching, even if I did zone out from time to time with the repetitiveness of it i would recommend giving it a watch as the whole movie is on You tube so you haven’t got anything to lose its free
