Resident evil 3 is a 2020 remake of the 1999 game of the same name (Subtitled Nemisis) and is a follow up to the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 remake.
I was super excited after the announcement of the remake of resident evil 3 as I loved playing through the Resident evil games on the PlayStation 1 (even though as a kid I never finished them as I was absolutely trash at video games at the time) and was wondering how it was going to compare to the Re2 remake, after all it comes hot on the heels of a game that was praised all across the board, for reviving and polishing a pretty amazing game anyway. So how does RE3 hold up to its original and the RE2 remake.
In terms of gameplay this plays pretty much identical to the RE2 remake with a few new editions such as the ability to dodge an attack from an enemy and the knife weapon is now instructible. So everything in terms of the control of the game is pretty spot on. However the game is far from great compared to the RE2 remake… Its nowhere near as tense and horror esq. Nemisis is nothing compared to Mr X, rather than him randomly hunting you down as you progress through the story he instead is bogged down by scripted events that are the same no matter how many play throughs you endure… And to get the money out of this game you need to play it over and over again because this is short, short game. My first play through clocked in at just over 4 hours and my 2nd run on Nightmare mode clocked in at 1 hour and 33 minutes and my 3rd play through, this was on Inferno by the way the hardest difficulty clocked in at 1 hour and 46 minutes. So hopefully that gives you a glimpse on just how short of a game this is… But that doesn’t mean it’s easy I struggled a little at time especially during the boss fights.
The graphics are spectacular and are made possible with the REengine, the same engine that RE7 was made and my god is this a great engine, developers should be trying to get this engine from capcom to make their games as everything from the models, environments, lighting and small little details look fantastic and I can see Capcom put so much care in the way this game looked. But it’s just unfortunate that the game is more style over substance.
I completed this game 3 times and half way through the 2nd I was bored, because the game is so linear and scripted there is nothing to see afterwards that would keep me wanting to keep playing (I just replayed for achievements). The game lacked the second campaign that the Re2 remake had and it suffer greatly from this which is a huge shame, as it didn’t change much but it was enough to keep me coming back.
The story is pretty generic as far as Resident evil games go. We have our character in a zombie outbreak and they need to uncover why and how it happened and of course its umbrella. This story isn’t going to win any awards but if you’re a fan of RE games then this will satisfy you but they should have modernised it a little more to revamp and 20 year old story especially in a era with great zombie games that have superb narratives *coughs ‘the last of us’.
The value of this game isn’t great yes it’s coupled in with a multiplayer mode but the base game is just far too short for a full retail price and I know the multiplayer is included in the price however I really wish I could have bought the campaign separately for about £25. But sadly not so I’m down £50.
Final Score.
Title:Okay.
Overall the game isn’t the worst it just had a lot to live up to after the stellar RE2 Remake. And if falls short massively which in my opinion is a massive shame. Hopefully they don’t cock up the Resident Evil 4 remake because that game is a Masterpiece. However Capcom if you’re reading this please can I move and shoot at the same time.
