Scoob! Is a 2020 Animated Reboot of the Scooby doo movie franchise it boasts an all-star voice cast of Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Gina Rodriguez, Will Forte and Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo to name a few. It is also written by more people than I have good friends. 6 people wrote this film and it does show…but is that a bad thing? let’s find out.
So if I was to quickly describe this movie I would say its occasionally funny but clustered and sloppy, but there is enough here to enjoy if you’re a familiar fan of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons. This movie does follow Mystery Inc mostly, however, we also have other characters from Hanna-Barbera such as Blue Falcon and Dino-mut, and Dick Dastardly and Muttley, so for me it would make sense to call this something else other than Scoob! Yes, the movie starts off with an origin of Mystery Inc but then doesn’t focus on the group as much as other Scooby-Doo Movies which is a shame. This movie is a Superhero movie a Hanna-Barbera Movie and Greek mythology all combined into one and when someone says Scooby-Doo I always think of Greek Mythos…Don’t you.
The people behind this movie have stated that they want to start a Cinematic Universe with these characters (as most studios try theses days) and I feel they tried too hard to establish a universe in the first movie instead of writing a scooby-doo story that fans would love. Now we have an animated movie that is chocked full of pop culture references and out of character decisions that don’t feel like the characters I grew up with.
However, on the topic of characters, I did like the choice of the voice cast for our main protagonists I felt they did a good job with what they were given in terms of performance. its the characters doing things that classic Mystery inc wouldnt that feels off and that’s all down to the writers, not the actors, which all do a great job here.
I do love the animation style even though its CG animation it doesn’t stray too far in terms of character design to feel like I’m watching unfamiliar characters and stays mostly true to the classics with some notable and justified changes. Yes, I’m looking at the Ascot Fred. The film even jokes about this as he puts it on to looks like a badass and instantly loses it. The biggest highlight of the movie is that the filmmakers recreated the old scooby doo intro in this fresh new animation including classic chase sequences and my favourite scooby doo monsters, Funland robot and Space Kook.
Overall I don’t hate this movie, it just wasn’t what I was expected and didn’t entertain me as much as it should have like all the other Scooby-Doo have done…Live-action and animated. If this movie does kick start a universe then lets hope that they are slightly better than this one or either way I’ll watch them but either way.
Final Score.
Title:Average
This movie has some good moments but is too reliant on starting a universe than making a good movie. i knew this would make me wish we had gotten a James Gunn written Scooby-Doo 3 as those live-action movies as terrible as they are from a film making standpoint… they’re a guilty pleasure.
