The Invisible Man Review.

The Invisible man is a Horror reboot of the 1933 film of the same name and is directed by Leigh Whannell and stars Elizibeth Moss as Cecilia Kass who is trapped in a abusive relationship with Adrian Griffin, Who after Cecilia leaves him commits suicide but strange things start to happen to Cecilia and she beleives Aaron has found a way to become invisible.

Now going into this film I was both anxious and hopeful. let’s start with the worry, The Mummy reboot was awful and it was Universals attempt to start its own cinematic universe called the dark universe and hopefully revamp old titles to a new audience alas that didn’t quite pan out. After The Mummy flopped all new projects in development were put on hold including the invisible man. Now up until the trailer came out i had no idea that this film was still happening as far as i knew it was on hold and was due to star Johnny Depp in the lead role when it was to eventually come out. However when the trailer came out I was quite surprised…It looked pretty good for a film i didn’t know even existed. My hopes were then raised even more when i found out it was written and directed by Leigh Whannell from SAW fame (The good one) and Insidious 3 a film i also found pretty good but my main excitement came from the fact that he wrote and directed UPGRADE and awesome, gritty and violent revenge story that flew under most people’s radar but was my favourite film of 2018 and that’s the year we got Avengers Infinity War. If you haven’t seen UPGRADE i highly recommend it, If someone were to ask for a good film recommendation the first thing i say is “Have you seen UPGRADE?” However back to the review of the invisible man.

To cut a long story short this film is great. It’s not really a ‘horror’ in the generic way it’s actually a expressive and creative way of depicting Domestic Abuse in a film and to say it’s quite unrealistic to have someone turn invisible and torment their ex partner, The film handles it really really well and it does feel real in terms of the abuse.

Elizabeth Moss gives the best performance I have ever seen in a horror lead. She plays this broken woman effortlessly and delivers an emotional, upsetting and at times unnerving performance and steals the show with every scene she is in. If she doesn’t at least win one award for this movie then people need to seriously reconsider how and who awards are given to because she deserves it.

Also let’s talk about how this film is shot. Its eery and bleak and it’s so so so tense having a character that is invisible can be difficult to handle but Whannell masterfully hacks it. He shoots the movie in such a way that leaves us wondering if Aaron is watching the characters at times where sometimes he does nothing to prove his presence. Let me explain. He has characters interacting with one another through actions and dialogue but in a lot of shots there is an empty space as if someone is supposed to be there or has been edited out but nothing come of it most of the time. So if you see this as the audience you begin to think “Aw shit something is about to happen” but then nothing and sometimes something it keeps you on your edge because you have no idea what’s coming next.

Final Score.

Title:Incredible

Invisible Man is a great time at the movies it has a great cast who all give stellar performances and is one of the best directed horror movies i’ve seen recently and just proves that Leigh Whannell isn’t just James Wan’s friend but a great Director if not better than Wan and needs to be out more in the spotlight because his work seems to go under the radar and it needs to be watched by all.
