Time Trap is a 2017 sci-fi movie written and directed by Ben Foster and Mark Dennis and tells the story of a group of friends and avid climbers who go looking for their missing professor who ironically went missing looking for a group of hippies who also vanished. They ascend into underground caverns to only to find out that time may be moving slower inside the cave than it is on the outside.
First of all, I severely underestimated this movie. For weeks my girlfriend had wanted to watch it together and I kept saying no as the trailer didn’t sell it for me and she didn’t have the best track record of picking movies except for 12 Monkeys, however, I caved in and its probably one of the best low budget movies I have seen it.
A lot happens in its short run time of 90 mins which for a film where time runs slower its a little tongue in cheek nod to the premise of the movie
For the most part, the acting is great, nothing Oscar-worthy but pretty solid, there is a little bit of clunky dialogue and one character is there just for comic relief but everything he says is funny unlike another character in major franchises, “Wesa know whats messa talk about right? Anyways I digress the characters are not particularly memorable as of writing this review I cannot remember any of the names but the movie itself though it has a stable set of actors the saving grace is the movies idea’s
It plays with the fact that time passes slower in these caves and its always been like that so certain characters and threats that show up may seem a little silly however they are necessary
Another strong point that the movie gets to boast is the special effects and just like the acting its nothing oscar worthy, however, for the budget, the movie was working with the special effects are damn near great they were well done especially one scene which I won’t spoil that involve a freeze-frame/slow-moving of some sort of action set-piece it was pretty spectacular to look at in such a low budget movie.
Just like ‘Freaks’ if you’ve seen that (I have also reviewed this one too), this movie is best watched going in blind and not knowing much about it. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea but for me, it is an impressive indie movie that totally went against my expectations.
Final Score.
Title:Good
This sort of movie just shows that you don’t need millions upon millions to make a movie you can make something great with unknown talent and a shoestring budget (compared to most) and most of all have fun doing it, and from written interviews that looks like just what they did.
